Nau Mai Haere Mai, Welcome to Pompallier Hokianga

The Pompallier Hokianga Trust preserves and promotes the memory and mission of the first Catholic Bishop of Aotearoa New Zealand, Jean Baptiste François Pompallier (1802-1871).

Many localities throughout the land were visited by Pompallier as he set up many mission stations and churches in both islands from 1838 to 1868. This Trust promotes visits to three of these important historic sites, all in the Hokianga district of Northland:

  • Totara Point, site of the first Mass on 13 January 1838
  • Motuti, where the Bishop has been reinterred in St Mary’s Church
  • Purakau, site of the first mission station from 1839 until 1915
